European Humanities University seeks Development Officer

The European Humanities University (EHU) is a Belarusian university in exile based in Vilnius, Lithuania. The University was founded in Minsk in 1992 and closed by authorities in 2004. It re-launched activities in Vilnius and was granted the status of a Lithuanian university in 2006. Currently, EHU is the only Belarusian University committed to academic freedom and the process of integrating a European higher education on BA and MA levels. The University offers quality liberal education and research. Students choose face-to-face or low residence study. EHU’s strong reputation has rapidly brought it into cooperation with well-known European and American universities, which is due both to the quality of its educational programs and the structure of its academic life.

Job Description

Title: Development Officer
Reports to: Vice Rector for Development and International Relations
Location: Vilnius, Lithuania

Position Summary
The Development Unit is charged with maximizing the financial gift support to the institution by seeking private contributions in order to increase the margin of excellence of its educational and research programs. It provides guidance in establishing and implementing a wide range of advancement policies and procedures for individual donors, contributing members, corporations and foundations.

The Unit is responsible for integrating the activities of institution-wide volunteer organizations and other groups with the mission and priorities of the organization. The Unit is committed to offering exceptional fundraising services, knowledge and counsel to donors, prospective donors, and the leadership of the University.

The incumbent works with a high degree of independence, keeping supervisors informed of unanticipated issues or controversies that may arise and recommending actions and solutions to such situations. Completed work is reviewed for soundness of overall approach and conformance with controlling management policies.

Key Duties
• Act as a hands-on proposal writer and facilitator between donor requirements and needs and priorities of the University in under the supervision of the Vice Rector for Development and International Relations and in cooperation with administration and faculty.
• Based upon his or her knowledge about the special interests of individuals, corporations and foundations, counsels institution staff members on matters relating to private funding, advising which funding sources might be appropriate for particular projects and the best manner of approaching them, and helping to formulate specific projects requiring private support.
• Identifies potential fund-raising prospects to secure an appropriate level of financing for institutional priorities.
• Assists in the coordination and management of the relationship of the University with corporations, foundations and individuals from who funds are sought for various programs and needs.
• Maintains the necessary communications to keep the institution name and achievements alive in the minds of individuals, corporate and foundation executives and board members.
• Maintain accurate and reliable information on the various programs and projects of the University.
• Conduct research and provide regular reports on the changing goals and interests of prospective contributors.
• Maintains records of all past and current approaches to outside funding sources in cooperation with the European Humanities Trust Fund.
• Writes and/or edits documents to describe projects to prospective donors and to persuade them to act as sponsor or co-sponsor.
• Responds verbally and in writing to questions posed by potential donors after due consultation with the appropriate Vice Rector.
• Maintains contact with donors after receipt of contributions including preparing acknowledgements, arranging for events, and arranges for periodic reports on program progress.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements
1. Graduate degree required with emphasis on communications preferred.
2. Minimum three years background exclusively in fund-raising, with experience in a university environment preferred.
3. Excellent writing and speaking skills in English. Working knowledge of Russian an asset.
4. Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of oral and written communications and interpersonal relations skills in order to determine the most effective method to present proposals, persuade prospects and personnel to accept suggestions and proposals.
5. Analytical skills and experience to assess the proposals and potential reactions of prospects to proposals and to development recommendations for stimulating interest in programs.
6. Creative skills and experience in producing innovative written materials to stimulate interest on the part of potential funding sources.
7. Thorough knowledge of potential funding sources.
8. Skill in relating needs of the institution to individuals and to giving programs of foundations and corporations.
9. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective and cooperative work relationships with potential funding sources and with senior staff.
10. Skill in working with multi-national Boards of Trustees.
11. Skill in working with a challenging, multi-cultural operating environment.
12. Ability to work discreetly, tactfully, sometimes at night and weekends to fulfill urgent deadlines.
13. Ability to travel.
